FAQ

What is Rag ‘n’ Bone Brown?

My name is Keith Brown, I'm from Norwich in the UK and I'm 39. Woodwork and upcycling has been a hobby of mine for many years. I'm self taught but I learned a lot from watching my favourite woodworkers on YouTube.

I like to make things out of stuff that people dispose of, so most of my projects are made from materials found by bins, in skips, at reclamation yards or donated to me.  It’s very rare that I buy wood.

I started to share photos and information about my projects on my blog in 2012 (see Early Projects), and started making videos for YouTube in 2015 where I have a growing list of views and subscribers.

Is this your full time job?

For many years it wasn't - but the support I receive from my patrons on Patreon and YouTube channel members in addition to ad revenue on YouTube allowed me to first reduce my hours at the "day job" in 2018, and then eventually in 2020 I was able to go full time with it - which is a dream come true.  It took 6 years of making weekly YouTube videos to get to a point where I was earning enough to do this full time.

What does “Rag ‘n’ Bone” mean?

According to Wikipedia: “A rag-and-bone man collects unwanted household items and sells them to merchants. Traditionally this was a task performed on foot, with the scavenged materials (which included rags, bones and various metals) kept in a small bag slung over the shoulder.”  By the way, I used the name prior to the singer "rag & bone man".  To be honest, he's kind of ruined the name for me!  If I could go back and change it, I would!

I appreciate what you do - how can I show my support?

One off donations via PayPal - donations are very much appreciated and they help me to continue providing free videos on YouTube, as well as buying tools, equipment for filming, hosting this website, etc.  Alternatively if you'd like to receive benefits like early access to my videos, exclusive content, free plans and cut lists for some of my projects, and a name credit at the end of my videos you can become a patron on Patreon or YouTube channel member.   You can also use my Amazon affiliate link if you are looking to buy something from there.  As an Amazon affiliate I earn a small commission from qualifying purchases.

Do you sell items that you’ve made?

I do sell some of the items I make on my Etsy store

Where can I find your woodworking project plans and cut lists?

The older project plans I created (pre 2018) are available via my Patreon page for free.

The newer plans (2018 onwards) are of a higher standard and are available free to my Patreon and YouTube channel members or for a small fee on my Etsy store

Can you make or build me something?

Possibly - email me

What camera do you use to film your videos?

I currently use the Canon EOS200D with two lenses - a 10-18mm and 18-55mm (the STM version, which has a quiet focus motor - great for video)  I'm really happy with it all - it's been a real workhorse and has taken a lot of knocks and abuse but still works perfectly.  Recently I also got 24mm and 50mm prime lenses

What microphone do you use for your videos?

I use the Blue Yeti USB microphone in the office to narrate my videos, a Rode Go Wireless for narration while talking to the camera

What software do you use to edit your videos?

I use Magix Vegas Pro 19.  It's ok, but it can be buggy, so I wouldn't necessarily recommend it - I mainly use it because it's what I'm used to using.
